UFOs are talk of the town in Fountain Hills

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. -- The International UFO Congress has come to the Valley for the first time, giving UFO enthusiasts the chance to hear about the "Phoenix lights" and other unexplained sightings in the skies.

The group is meeting through Sunday at the Fort McDowell Resort and Casino near Fountain Hills. More than 20 speakers will discuss UFO incidents ranging from the "Phoenix lights" to an alien landing in eastern Arizona to the Roswell incident, the most noted of UFO cases.

"These are not just a bunch of crazy people in the middle of nowhere who are seeing UFOs or talking about UFOs," said conference organizer Alejandro Rojas. "It's very credible people who go all the way to the top levels of the military and the government."

Rojas said six retired military servicemen will talk about their experiences with alien craft.

"Most of them had UFO sightings while they were in service, and they are going to talk about those sightings and what happened when they reported them," Rojas said.

Former Phoenix City Councilwoman Frances Barwood will discuss the 1997 Phoenix lights event that many people claim never has been explained.

"She's talking about hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of witnesses she talked to and her efforts to get this sighting investigated," said Rojas.

The meeting is the largest UFO conference in the United States. About 1,000 people are expected to attend.

Rojas said Arizona is the perfect place to host the UFO conference.

"You have the most clear skies of any state, you have the most sky-watching going on and you have a lot of sightings," he said.

Among the speakers will be Travis Walton, who claims he was taken for five days by aliens who landed in the forest near Show Low in 1975. His story was made into a movie, "Fire in the Sky."

Other speakers will talk about the alleged alien landing near Roswell, N.M., in June or July 1947, and Nevada's Area 51, which Rojas said is "a very popular place.

"People believe that possibly there were crash UFOs taken there and there are people who have come out of there who are alleged to have worked there and to have seen this sort of thing happen."

Area 51, northwest of Las Vegas, is a secret military base which has served as a center for CIA operations.

A film festival and musical entertainment are on the agenda for the meeting which ends Sunday.
