Recently, a California man has made a name for himself on Youtube after he posted a video that reportedly shows UFOs over his California home. Now, while this may not be all that interesting in itself, the catch with this video is, at least according to the shooter, the UFOs are visible only in the infrared.

Originally posted a few days ago by a Youtube user whose screen name is KevinMC360, the video has since gone viral, spreading to all kinds of news and paranormal websites. Unfortunately for believers, upon close examination, both the video and the story behind it is highly suspect.

First of all, the shooter makes quite a leap of faith by first making this suggestion that the UFO is an alien spacecraft at all (remember, 'UFO' stands for 'unidentified flying object'). The 'proof' that the UFO is alien? Well, low-flying jets are a lot bigger, so the smaller size of the UFO automatically makes it an alien craft, never mind the fact that it could be a plane much higher in the sky.

Second, the claim that the UFO is only visible in the infrared is worthless. Why? Well, it appears that the shooter was only looking through the night-vision camera and when he asks his wife if she can see the mysterious lights in the sky, she replies in the negative. Chances are that the shooter's wife may not have been looking at the right patch of sky at all (after all, the shooter, eye in the viewfinder, can't turn around to make sure she's looking in the right spot).

In the end, this claim of alien spaceships over California is nothing but a story. First, there is no independent corroboration of a UFO sighting in the area at the same time, which is not a good way to start off such a story. Second, the claims made in the video, namely that the UFO was only visible in the infrared, is unverifiable because there is no way to verify that the shooter's wife was looking in the right area of sky. Lastly, and most damaging, the shooter makes a giant assumption by justifying that the mysterious lights are alien craft on the observation that low-flying jets appear much bigger. Simply put, the lights remain unidentified, but in the eyes of any serious investigator, this story has been identified as yet another wild, unverifiable claim that is hardly worthy of serious investigation.

So, what could the lights be? One option: An unidentified conventional aircraft.
